Phlegm is a thick and viscous substance secreted by the mucus membrane in the respiratory tract in attempt to fight infections, especially when the organism suffers from cold.

It usually accumulates on the throat and chest and causes congestion which is usually expelled through coughing.

The excess phlegm is associated with flu, sinusitis, cod or other viral or bacterial infections. It may be also caused as a result of asthma, damaged vocal cords and hay fever. The symptoms of accumulated phlegm are weakness and fever, difficulty in breathing, runny nose and constant cough.

Although it is not extremely serious issue, it may clog the bronchial tubes if it is not treated on time. Experiencing this problem may be frustrating and annoying. However, there are some herbs and natural remedies which can remove the phlegm and mucus from your chest and throat.

Ginger is a natural decongestant and antihistamine. It has antibacterial, expectorant and antiviral properties which ease the congestion by stimulating the elimination of the buildup and by drying out the mucus. Consume ginger tea couple of times a day or chew two or three slices of ginger few times a day.

Natural Ingredients:

• One tablespoon of black peppercorns
• 6-7 pieces of ginger
• Two cups of honey
• One tablespoon of honey

Heat the water and as soon as it starts simmering, add the ginger chunks and the black peppercorns. Cover the pan with a lid and let it boil for a minute. Next, lower the heat and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes. The color will turn to yellow. If you want the tea to have stronger taste, you can add some more ginger to the water which should simmer for more than 20 minutes. Next, strain the tea and add the honey. Drink it while it is hot in small sips three times a day to ease the congestion.

Turmeric, on the other hand, contains curcumin which has antiseptic and healing properties. It reduces the buildup of phlegm by destroying the bacteria responsible for the excessive mucus production.

Needed Ingredients:

• A quarter tablespoon of salt
• One tablespoon of turmeric
• A glass of warm water

Put the turmeric in a glass of water and add the salt. Mix them well and gargle with small amount of it. Repeat this four times a day to loosen the mucus and reduce the phlegm.

The most effective way to eliminate the mucus is to gargle with salt water. The salt has antibacterial properties and the water has soothing effects. This mixture will decrease the production of mucus and phlegm.

Add half a tablespoon of salt into a glass of warm water and stir it well. To loosen the phlegm, gargle with it. Repeat it three times a day until you remove the phlegm.

You can eliminate the mucus with steaming as well. Namely, it allows the vapors to travel down your throat, providing relief. For additional healing effects you can infuse water with herbs.

• Half and tablespoon of thyme
• 4-5 cups of water
• Half a tablespoon of rosemary

Add the dried herbs in boiling water. Cover your head with a towel so that the vapors will go directly in your face. Inhale the steam for ten minutes 3-5 times a day to expel the phlegm and mucus from the throat. You can also try a steamy shower.

The honey has antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties which soothe the irritation in the respiratory tract. The lemon contains vitamin C which clears the congestion and strengthens the immune system.

• One tablespoon of honey
• Two tablespoons of lemon juice

Mix the honey and the lemon juice. Drink the mixture three times a day to get relief and to cure the phlegm.
The apple cider vinegar is another item which can be helpful in this case as well. It alkalizes the body by balancing the pH levels and prevents excess production of mucus.

Put a tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar into a glass of water. Mix it well and drink the mixture three times a day to remove the accumulated mucus. You can also gargle with it to soothe your sore throat.

Additional tips:

• Use humidifier to control the production of mucus
• Blow your nose regularly to expel the buildup phlegm
• Eat garlic and peppers to thin the mucus and to eliminate the congestion.
• Stop smoking, since it additionally irritates the respiratory system causing congestion
• Stay away from hazardous chemicals, household cleaners and paint fumes since they can irritate your throat and nose.
• Do not consume cold foods and drinks
• Make sure you do not swallow the accumulated mucus or phlegm, instead gargle and spit it out.
